Social Anxiety Disorder-
As the name suggests Social anxiety disorder is an anxiety disorder of social situation. In 6 months 2-3 persons in 100 suffers from this disorder. Females are affected more commonly than males. Social anxiety disorder can be presented with other anxiety disorders, mood disorders, substance-related disorders and bulimia nervosa.
Why does a person suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder?
- Shyness in childhood
- Overprotective parents
- Submissive human nature
- Chemical imbalance in brain (specifically dopamine)
- Family history of social anxiety disorder
Symptoms-
Marked fear or anxiety about one or more social situations. Examples include social interactions (e.g., having a conversation, meeting unfamiliar people), being observed (e.g., eating or drinking), and performing in front of others (e.g., giving a speech).
Preoccupation with humiliation or embarrassment, rejection or offend others. The social situations almost always provoke fear or anxiety. The social situations are avoided or endured with intense fear or anxiety.
The fear or anxiety is out of proportion to the actual threat posed by the social situation.
